Hi Fellow Ostomates!

I have a permanent Colostomy. (But a similar story for an Ileostomy or a Urostomy.)

I thus wear a pouch which I empty and change perfectly normally and regularly.

Just like you do……

Of course, being a fairly active fellow, there’s an ever present, potential risk of a parastomal hernia occurring, and so I’ve been wearing a standard support belt for the last thee years. But, I confess, rather on and off…

This is fine until the pouch starts to fill. Then the belt squashes the pouch; and then the pouch… Well you don’t want me to go on do you? You well know it’s then NOT a bunch of fun… Vexatious to say the least! We’ve all been there! I rather lose my confidence completely if that happens!

Anyway I was lucky enough to be given an appointment by Colchester Hospital’s quite brilliant Stoma Dept. with Tim Barnacle of the also fantastic Penlan Medical, for a fitting, by him, of a Nu-Hope support belt.

Wow! Very clever item! The pouch is passed through a carefully measured, manufactured hole in the belt, and the hole’s perimeter is reinforced with a firm plastic ring. The elastic part of the belt is cleverly striated which makes for a far superior item. More support with much more comfort. Result! I didn’t realise how hi-tech an elastic belt could get!

But the really clever bit is that there is an elastic ‘trap-door’ over-flap, which stretches over the hole, and completes the support. The ‘trap-door’ has a proper technical name:- a ‘prolapse-over-belt-thing-me-jig’, or some fancy name, but whatever; its a ‘trap-door’ to me!

Normally this ‘trap-flap-door’ is closed, to give somewhat lighter support than the main belt (by design) over the Stoma. But I leave the trap door open at the times of day when I know, that less pressure on the pouch and contents is jolly well advisable!

That’s when I know it needs to ‘fill and breathe’…

Tim & Emmy of Penlan Medical were amazing over the fitting and supply. They’ve got incredible expertise and clinical experience. Nothing was too much trouble. Extremely helpful advice by email and telephone.

They made me feel special and cared about. Because in their eyes, I genuinely was. So very reassuring, because as an ostomate, I do sometimes feel very ‘up against it’…

In fact they will supply me with three of these belts – a ‘Wear/Care/Spare’ trio, so there’s always one being worn, another being gentle-machine/hand washed, and another on rotation as a spare.

Penlan have provided me with outstanding service; and all through the NHS prescription service.

I’m a very lucky chap…

This has all helped increase my Stoma self confidence. That’s a big plus. I love that kind of encouragement.
